It is midnight on the night before classes start, and I need to take my husband Ben to the Emergency Room. According to the academic calendar, tomorrow I will hand my freshmen their syllabi. This one final ER trip before school starts means that I’ve brought Ben here five times this season–these trips and a two night admission make it a personal record for most hospitalizations in a single year.

I don’t want this tonight. I’d rather he finally be better–for his lungs to start working well again, for his giant bag of medicine to become effective, for his exhausting list of respiratory diagnoses to all calm down and just leave him alone for once.
